An Elegant Tribute to a Visionary Watchmaker

by on May 1st, 2012

Last year, A. Lange & Sohne announced the production of an extremely limited series of watches, commemorating the 165th anniversary of Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s founding of his Glashutte manufacture. We just received one of the first to hit US shores: the “Homage to F. A. Lange” Lange 1 Tourbillon.

The tourbillon incorporates remarkable features that you will not find in any other watch. The case is in 18k honey-colored gold- a proprietary alloy that Lange created for this watch series. The honey gold has an unparalleled warmth to it, almost resembling the elegant patina taken on by Lange movements (in German silver) in the years following their production. Moreover, the solid silver dial is stunning with its exposed tourbillon mechanism and hand-guillochéd hour & minute sub-dial.

Finally, the Homage version of the Lange 1 Tourbillon incorporates a movement so innovative it would have made F. A. Lange proud. This is the first tourbillon movement that can actually be stopped, even when the watch is fully wound. This enables for time to be set to the second and to allow better viewing of the exquisitely finished tourbillon escapement.

Limited to 150 pieces worldwide, this watch is a collector’s dream come true.

Introducing the Betteridge Diamond Collection

by on April 10th, 2012

Last week, we launched a new section on our website devoted to the Betteridge Diamond Collection.

We have photographed each and every diamond, pairing it accurately with its GIA certificate on the site. Better yet, the diamonds are available for viewing in our stores.

Many of these diamonds offer truly exceptional value. Over the years, we have done our best to buy diamonds opportunistically, helping to ensure favorable pricing for our customers.

There is no better way to showcase a spectacular diamond than in an elegant, handcrafted setting. You can see a few of our favorite designs in our engagement ring guide.

We hope that you enjoy the newest addition to Betteridge.com, and please let us know if you have any suggestions to improve it.

Betteridge & the Creation of the “Million Dollar Belt”

by on December 3rd, 2010

In 1989, the WWE approached Betteridge with an exciting request: to design and manufacture a championship wrestling belt for Ted Dibiase, the Million Dollar Man. We just found this wonderful clip of the WWE’s footage surrounding the creation of the “Million Dollar Belt.”

We are not displaying these products just to generate sales. We created Betteridge.com first and foremost to enhance our customer service. We believe that there are times when our customers want to receive the same level of care that they do in our stores from the comfort of their living rooms.

We’re building this service to be one that we want to use- full of products that are curated by experts from the finest jewelry and watch collections and managed by sales professionals who care more about making customers happy than padding a quarterly report.

This is just the beginning. Betteridge.com is evolving every day, as we add more products and functionality. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do to improve this service for you.

Rolex Submariner Date: The King of All Luxury Dive Watches

by on December 1st, 2009

Submariner Date, ref. 116619, 18k white gold

The new Rolex Submariner with the blue dial is my favorite men’s watch. It incorporates a number of features that I appreciated in early subs, such as the now retro-styled cerachrom bezel.

However, it looks a little bigger on the wrist, due to the larger lugs and crown guards, and feels heavier thanks to the solid gold case and bracelet. This is a watch that you can wear with pride in the office, scuba diving with your family or doing work in the yard.

The Bell & Ross BR-S Ceramic: Chic Watches for the Coolest Girl You Know

Bell & Ross BR-S Ceramic with Diamond Bezel, Retail $4,800

Dad and I gave the white ceramic version of this Bell & Ross to my sister, Brooke, for her birthday.

Brooke is hands-down the most fashionable girl I know, so the fact that she has barely taken it off since she unwrapped it is the perfect testament to just how special the Bell & Ross BR-S Ceramic collection is.

Betteridge.com: Technology Meets Tradition

by on October 1st, 2009

We are old fashioned. We like knowing customers’ names and trading stories with them on Saturday afternoons. We like writing out repair slips by hand and working on sales cases that were built by my granddad before World War II. Technology often makes companies impersonal, and that’s the antithesis of who we are.

Six months ago, fresh from a Bay Area Internet company, Dad tasked me with finding a manner to incorporate leading technologies into our business without losing what makes us special.

To this end, we just launched a new and greatly improved Betteridge.com. The online jewelry and watch industry is riddled with forgeries, poor customer service and shoddy products. Through our website, we will do our best to extend the Betteridge experience- our talented sales staff, our access to nearly impossible to find products, and most importantly, our personality- to people who may not always find it convenient to visit us.

Today, Betteridge.com displays exemplary pieces for each of our different jewelry and watch designers. Eventually we plan to load the nearly 10,000 products that we carry onto our website in an elegant and searchable manner. For instance, in the near future, we are launching new sections that showcase our leading estate jewelry and pre-owned watch collections, so that you will be able to view our newest finds, even if you can’t come into a store.

The goal of the website is not to replace interaction in our stores with e-commerce, but rather to make it easier for customers to figure out what they want and how we can really help them.

Patrick Mavros: Talented Silversmith, Loving Dad

by on June 1st, 2009

Patrick Mavros Silverback Gorilla Silver Sculptures

Although Patrick Mavros’s flagship store is on Fulham Road in London, he is quick to point out that he is not an Englishman; he is Zimbabwean through and through.

Mavros creates some of the finest silver in the world from a rustic estate on a hilltop outside Harare. From his rural compound, Mavros crafts exquisite silver sculptures, jewelry, and accessories that bring the African Bush into the homes of his prestigious clientele, which includes the English Royal Family and J.K. Rowling.

In keeping with his quixotic, truly authentic personality his animal sculptures are startlingly realistic yet charmingly whimsical. From elephant wine coasters and monkey swizzle sticks, to Baobab tree candelabras and exquisitely cast silverback gorilla sculptures (pictured above), Mavros’s creations come to life before your eyes.

Although Mavros is best known as a talented silversmith, his life revolves around his wife, Catja, and their four sons: Patrick Jr., Alexander, Benjamin and Forbes. His sons are actively involved in the business, and have helped create a distinctive line of products that will bring a smile of satisfaction to the face of even the most discriminating dad.
