Panerai Luminor Collection: Exquisite Timepieces for Watch Aficionados

by on November 1st, 2009

1950 Luminor Marina 3-Days (retail $7,400) and 1950 Luminor 8-Days GMT (retail $30,200)

After opening Panerai’s New York City boutique, I developed a knack for spotting those Panerai watches treasured by watch aficionados. Over the past week, we have put two of these watches on display: the PAM-312 (the watch I wear!) and the PAM-289.

New for 2009, the PAM-312, with its in-house movement capable of operating for 72-hours without winding, is an exciting way to break into Panerai ownership. On the other hand, for the more advanced collector who travels frequently, there is nothing better than the PAM-289, a limited production watch with the coveted 1950’s-style Luminor case in rose gold.

Panerai Luminor 1950 Marina, Retail $7,400

2009 is an exciting year in the world of Panerai – it marks the introduction of the P.9000 calibre movement, Panerai’s first “workhorse” movement to be manufactured entirely in-house.

Panerai is releasing two models that incorporate the new movement, the PAM00312 (strap version) and the PAM00328 (bracelet version), both of which are protected by a 44mm stainless steel Luminor 1950 case with a basic black dial.

The watches feature an automatic mechanical movement with a power reserve capacity of three days, as well as small second hand and date complications. A see-through case back displays the P.9000 movement, and the dial is covered by sapphire crystal that has been treated with an anti-reflective coating. Additionally, the watches are water resistant to 300 meters.
