Whimsy as High Art

by on August 11th, 2012

Occasionally, the great Parisian jewelers all stepped back from classically opulent jewelry making to design something artistic and amusing, while still maintaining unsurpassed quality in material and design.

By Van Cleef & Arpels, this jewel of a British bulldog is a representational tour de force. With enameled wingtip collar and chained diamond monocle, not only is all England invoked, but Winston Churchill in particular. Tenacity and single-minded purpose dressed as a gentleman…

I’ve spent much of my life on the hunt for wonderful and unique jewelry pieces. My favorite jewelry has meaning- in this case, the historic allure of one of the most important men, and greatest characters, of modern times.

Van Cleef & Arpels Vintage Alhambra Necklace

Is there any stone more perfectly suited to the idyllic carefree nature of the summer season than turquoise?

Turquoise has always seemed to me to be the most cheerful, fun, and whimsical gemstone around. These brightly colored, yet unassuming beauties are the pure embodiment of summer. There is something about wearing a gorgeous turquoise piece that just seems to lighten the spirits and brighten up a room.

Whether you happen to be an effortlessly cool trendsetter, (think Verdura’s diamond-studded “Polka Dot” ring, $8,500), carefree and fun-loving, (think Van Cleef & Arpels’ Vintage Alhambra necklace), a bit edgy, (think Yossi Harari’s “Libra” turquoise beaded wrap necklace, $2,285), or truly glamorous, (think Paul Morelli’s “Oval Window” cabochon turquoise & pavé-set diamond cocktail ring, $10,760), a bit of turquoise is the perfect way to break out of your jewelry “rut” and embrace the color of the season!

Whatever your personal style, there is a turquoise piece for you.

Van Cleef & Arpels Sweet Alhambra Pendant & Bracelet

Young girls want to look like their moms. Girls try on mom’s makeup, put on her clothes and try on her jewelry.

It’s this wonderful rite of passage that makes the Sweet Alhambra collection, which is meant to be worn by daughters and their mothers together, so special.

An Elegant Van Cleef & Arpels Emerald & Diamond Necklace

Van Cleef & Arpels Emerald & Diamond Necklace, 9.2 total carats of emeralds and 47.7 total carats of diamonds, $225,000

In the 1960′ and 70’s, jewelry became far more colorful with striking contrast and daring juxtapositions. Inspired once more by the influence of India, jewelry that was worn over the tunics of Maharajah’s became a cornerstone of Van Cleef & Arpels designs.

Although only bi-colored, this necklace illustrates stark contrast between brilliant green and the purest white with oval cluster motifs reminiscent of the magnificent sarpechs and bazubands worn by India’s aristocrats.

At this time, the House of Arpels was the world’s leading “haute joalliere” focusing on the finest stones combined with exceptional craftsmanship. This necklace is cleverly constructed to convert to a magnificent bracelet that is as chic and wearable today as when it was originally made.

The client list of Van Cleef & Arpels in the early twentieth century reads like a who’s who list of the wealthiest men and most beautiful women of the period. Her Imperial Majesty Farah Pahlavi, Princess Grace of Monaco and Lady Granard all favored fine jewelry by this venerated designer.

The style and quality of this necklace would fit in any of the world’s great jewelry collections and its style will endure for generations to come.

The New Van Cleef & Arpels Magic Alhambra: The Magic of Autumn

by on September 1st, 2009

Magic Alhambra Bracelet & Earrings; 18k gold, tiger's eye & carnelian

I love the colors of fall in New England- the vivid yellows, deep reds and vibrant oranges of the foliage. The sun sets lower in the sky, much warmer than the harsh glare of summer, gracing everything autumnal with the slightest touch of gold.

This week we received an early reminder of fall’s rapid approach in the form of the most recent addition to Van Cleef & Arpels’ Magic Collection, a new line of Alhambra jewelry that features stylish autumnal colors.

The new Magic Alhambra collection is composed of rich, striated goldish-brown tiger’s eye and reddish-brown carnelian motifs, outlined with finely beaded bands of yellow gold. True to the aesthetic of the Magic Collection, the jewelry incorporates the classic quatrefoil shape in varying colors and sizes with intermittent dangling Alhambra charms. In short, the overall effect is one of elegant, fall chic.

In the case of its newest Alhambra series, Van Cleef & Arpels has yet again proven that it remains an extremely original design house worthy of international renown.
